Road Map of I-95
Providence to New York estimated travel time: 3 hours 17 minutes (without traffic), distance: 178.42 miles. This distance was traveled many times by Lauren, at NYU, on the island of Manhattan and Todd, at Brown, on the island of Rhode when we started dating in '97.

Cheese Fries
Available 24 hours a day for $5.65 at the Colony Diner in East Meadow. Cheese fries were necessary fuel for college graduates on Long Island looking to move to California and scrimping and saving money in '98.

Golden Gate Bridge
As seen in Todd's painting, G-House Rooftop Garden. A crew works year-round to keep all 8,991 feet of this landmark covered in international orange paint to impress all folks newly arrived from the east coast in '99.

Sangria
Generously combine cheap wine, vodka, sugar, brandy, fruit juice and sliced fruit in a large bowl or bucket. Let sit overnight or for 2 minutes. Enjoy with good friends and a skyline view of San Francisco late into any night of '00.

Phillip Burton Federal Building
The gray edifice was the highly visible and only view from the 350 sq ft studio apartment in the T'Loin that we shared for 3 1/2 years, starting in '01.

Fire
For one week every August, over 40,000 people gather in the Nevada desert to create the Burning Man festival - a legally-recognized yet temporary city created from bare desert where creativity reigns and nothing is for sale. Lauren and Todd overcome their skepticism and become enthusiastic 'burners' in '02.

Pink Bricks
The San Francisco Department of Public Works provides free paint for people who wish to cover graffiti, though colors are difficult to match. Pink in particular was a tough swatch, as found near Todd and Lauren's 15th Street apartment in '03.

Coconuts
The Indian state of Kerala produces about 3.5 lakh tonnes of copra, or dried coconut meat, much of which is pressed to create coconut oil. As photographed by Lauren during our three-week whirlwind tour of the subcontinent in '04.

Grass
As can be grown behind 1085 Capp Street, Todd and Lauren's swanky apartment since October 2004. The grass was kept partially mowed by Guillermo, the feral guinea pig (may he rest in peace) and was particularly enjoyed by friends during BBQs in '05.

Goats
Goats can climb treacherous rocky hills with pitches of 60 degrees and more, as witnessed by Lauren and Todd on the path to Zeus' cave in Greece in '06.

Rings
Wearable bottle openers are both a traditional emblem of love and commitment and a really cool party trick.
